Are platinum rings hypoallergenic?

Yes! Platinum rings are great for people with sensitive skin, as they’re made almost entirely from pure platinum. They also don’t contain any nickel, a metal that typically causes allergic reactions and ring rash.

Softer gemstones like opal or peridot are also vulnerable to scratching, so may also get damaged by scratches or knocks. 

However, any scratches on a platinum ring are easy to remove. Platinum is a very dense material, so scratches displace the metal instead of removing it entirely. Polishing a platinum ring usually removes any sign of scratching or minor damage. 

Do platinum rings tarnish over time?

No! Platinum rings are popular because they’re low-maintenance and don’t tarnish or fade over time. Some rings can develop a patina, formed by the accumulation of natural oils and scratches on the metal surface, but a quick polish easily removes this. 

Platinum alloy rings can tarnish slightly, but platinum is very unreactive, so it’s usually the additional metal that oxidises slightly. 

Unlike white gold or silver rings, platinum rings don’t have rhodium plating, so its silvery sheen is unlikely to fade over time.

Yes, but it’s much harder or even sometimes impossible to make a ring several sizes bigger or smaller. Most platinum rings can be adjusted so they can fit you better: a skilled jeweller can alter a platinum ring by up to one or two sizes. 

However, additional details like engravings, small gemstones, intricate details, or inlays can make resizing a ring much harder. Some are impossible to resize because jewellers may be unwilling to damage intricate elements. If you want an ornate ring, consider double-checking your ring size before you purchase it, just in case.
