Thinking of getting an engraved ring? We’ve answered some of the most commonly asked questions to help you decide on a final design!
Most rings can be engraved, from fashion rings, signet rings, and kid’s rings to wedding and engagement rings and eternity bands. They pair well with other engraved jewellery, like our Engraved Date Bar Necklace.
There are some exceptions, though. Some band materials, like silicone, can’t be engraved. Rings with too many intricate details, inlays, or vulnerable gemstones also can’t be engraved because doing so would damage those extra accents too much.
It depends on the style of your ring, and what kinds of engraving you’re interested in.
Vintage-inspired rings with simpler engravings often look best with traditional, hand-engraved techniques. Gold, silver, and platinum are best for this technique, as they’re soft enough to be chipped away by hand to produce beautiful, meticulously crafted designs with a personal touch.
Complex engravings or engravings on tougher metals like titanium, tungsten carbide, or stainless steel are typically done with a laser (operated by a human or computer). The laser technique allows for more intricate designs and images, like fingerprints or ornate family crests, compared to traditional hand-engraving.
Sometimes, yes! If not properly cared for, an engraved ring can have a shorter lifespan than other rings, as dirt and other debris can accumulate inside indentations in the band. Traditional metals like gold, sterling silver and platinum are also typically softer, so engraved designs can be more vulnerable to knocks or scratches.
Deeper engravings might also impact the structural integrity of a ring and make it more susceptible to knocks or damage. To prolong the lifespan of your engraved rings, clean the engraving regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush and keep your ring away from excess water or harsh chemicals.
Mostly, yes! For gold, sterling silver and platinum engraved rings, it’s a relatively easy, if costly, process. A jeweller can use a laser to level out the band’s surface and then polish it to restore the smoothness of the original ring.
Gold and silver-plated rings are harder to work with, as the plating must be reapplied after the engraving is removed. Since that takes up more time and resources, removing an engraving on a plated ring typically costs more.
Engravings on rings made of titanium or tungsten cannot be removed, as the process adds holes, makes the material porous, and damages its structural integrity. Engravings on costume jewellery also can’t be removed because the material disintegrates.
In recent years, engraved wedding bands have become fashionable again, thanks to a growing trend towards self-expression and individuality in jewellery design.
An engraved wedding or engagement ring should be a symbol of love that highlights your unique bond with your partner and celebrates the ways you support and care for each other. Couples often opt to engrave each other’s initials, the date of their first date, or each other’s fingerprints on their wedding rings.
Above all, choose an engraving design that reminds you of your partner when they’re not with you.
In 2025, customers are seeking more unique designs that help them express themselves, their interests, and their bonds with their loved ones. Religious symbol rings, family crests, initial rings (like our Initial Letter Dot Ring), fingerprints, and memorable quotes are especially popular this year, as are engraved name jewellery.
If nothing calls out to you, you can also request a bespoke engraving! Just be aware that engravings are limited by the size of the band surface and any fonts or styles you choose.
It depends! In general, avoid fonts with elaborate swirls or very thin letters, as these are harder to read. Signet rings also look best with authoritative serif fonts, as they’re closely associated with status, wealth, and aristocratic power.
Vintage-inspired fonts like Copperlate or Forum suit vintage rings best, whilst modern fonts like Arial or Helvetica might look better on contemporary designs.
Most jewellers are also happy to advise you on the fonts they offer when you request an engraving, so don’t worry if you’re not sure what you want.
