What materials are best for fresh piercings to avoid irritation?

To avoid irritation, the best materials for fresh piercings are hypoallergenic, high-quality metals. Examples of metals that are less likely to cause irritation include titanium and gold. 

We use solid gold or gold vermeil (18K gold on 925 silver) across our gold jewellery ranges, including our piercing jewellery collection. With gold vermeil, this gold layer provides a hypoallergenic barrier that ensures our piercing jewellery is suitable for people with sensitive skin.

Our piercing jewellery is also available in titanium. We only use the very best premium titanium throughout our piercing jewellery collection. Titanium is well known for its hypoallergenic quality and for this reason it is commonly used in piercing jewellery.

Can I change my piercing immediately after getting pierced?

Whatever piercing you get, it is not advised to change your piercing immediately after getting a piercing. We recommend that you follow the piercer’s instructions and wait until the piercing is healed or until they say so. 

If you change the jewellery too soon this can put you at risk of infection, and irritation, or prevent the piercing from healing properly. You should be provided with all the aftercare instructions following your appointment. It is important that you follow these in order to avoid risk of complications. 

How do I choose the right gauge size for my piercing jewellery?

It is important that you choose the right gauge size for your piercing. Selecting the wrong gauge can impact comfort and healing. The gauge size will depend on factors such as the type of piercing or part of the body you have pierced. 

Basically, the gauge is the thickness of the barbell, whilst the length is the distance between the two ends of the jewellery. Every body part is different, so consider which sizing would be most appropriate for your piercing. 

For example, the most common size for a belly button ring is a 14 gauge (1.6mm). For helix piercings 16 and 18 gauge is typically used. Take into account the gauge size, and also length, when searching for the right piercing jewellery.

Can I wear my piercing jewellery while exercising or swimming?

You can wear your piercing jewellery while exercising or swimming, but only once your piercing is properly healed. Afterwards, it’s advisable to clean the jewellery and dry the area thoroughly to remove sweat, chlorine, or salt water. This is a healthy habit to get into, to help avoid infection, and also to keep your piercing jewellery looking good.
