Natural diamonds form in the Earth’s crust or near volcanic activity, and they’re often mined using a method known as ‘open mining’. This technique involves removing the top layer of soil to reach the gemstone layer, which can severely damage habitats and the local environment. 

As the name suggests, lab-grown diamonds are made in a laboratory. Heat and pressure are applied to a carbon-rich material around a diamond seed, a process that can take up to a few weeks to complete. They’re more environmentally friendly, but some see them as artificial.
